String Group

The Pennant Hills Public School String Ensemble was founded in 2001 and is a vital and thriving arm of the school's performing arts program. The Ensemble has since flourished, now comprising of 25 - 30 violin, viola, cello and double bass players from Kindergarten through to Year 6.

String Ensemble enrolments are accepted throughout the year.

Our Ensemble leadership provides valuable support and encouragement, and fantastic opportunities for children to grow in confidence and skill with their instrument.

Lorraine Chai is the strings conductor of PHPS and runs the "Intro to Strings" program twice a year where students get to try a string instrument, learn the basics of music and the instrument as well as learning how to play together as a group. This is a great way for your child to try an instrument in a fun, informal environment. For more information please email enquiries to phpsstrings@gmail.com

Within the greater ensemble, our senior Festival String Ensemble (FSE) is also open to students of higher proficiency levels. Entry to the FSE is by invitation should a student qualify.

The String Ensemble performs at a number of school events such as assemblies, Music Camp, Fete and concerts within and outside School. Additionally, our Festival String Ensemble has the privilege of performing at the Sydney Opera House in Term 3 of the school year.

When joining the String Ensemble it is assumed that your child:

  • Has been learning their instrument for at least 2-3 months
  • Has regular, weekly private tuition
  • Has their own instrument (hired or purchased)
  • Can commit to weekly rehearsals
  • Can attend performances in and outside of school
  • Can attend a weekend Music Camp
  • Festival senior students can attend a second regular weekly rehearsal

The Ensemble is run by parent volunteers who assist with rehearsal set up, financial administration, planning and oversight. Parent involvement is expected and encouraged.

The 2021 ensemble convenor is Kate. She is assisted in the management of the group by 5-8 parent subcommittee members.
