Beeswax wrap demonstration

This term in science, Stage 2 students have learned about packaging and they have witnessed and discussed what happens to our waste during our excursion to Kimbriki. As part of our unit, students have also had to consider more sustainable packaging options. On Monday, they had the opportunity to watch a demonstration by one of our parents, Felicity J, on how to make beeswax wraps. Felicity talked us through the process of making these (considerably easier than expected!), as well as how to care for them and how to use them. This is an alternative to cling wrap and it was new to many students and many have expressed an interest in making and using them. The students were also shown other packaging options, such as reusable produce bags and ziplock bags, and were told that soft plastics can actually be recycled through REDcycle at major supermarkets.

Students in Stage 2 are learning about packaging in our unit 'Wrap it Well'. They are exploring different types of packaging, investigating why certain packaging works well and they are also looking at how sustainable packaging is and how packaging can impact the environment.

Students in 4M were investigating how they could make packaging stronger by folding paper in different ways.

3B worked diligently and were engrossed with the problem-solving experiment in Stage 2's Science Unit - "May the Force be With You!". The images demonstrate the commitment and logistical thought process being conducted during the finalisation of the test. All tests were successful in protecting the water balloon from the effects of force and gravity.

As part of our Science Unit - "May the warmth be with you" we have been learning about the effects of heat. Students in Stage 2 have been making solar ovens so they can 'cook' s'mores in the playground. Last week 3R completed their solar ovens and were able to investigate the impact of the sun and heat on food. A few quotes from their investigations were:

"I learned that I should have made sure our solar oven was in line with the sun as only half of them melted"

"The marshmallows melted and they went all gooey"

"I learned that the plastic wrap helped keep the heat in our solar oven"

Well done Stage 2 Scientists!
